I always say that worship leading is more about leadership than musicianship.

What are the qualities of a great leader?

Let me give you four in this quick video.

As I give you these four, think through each one and see if you are weak

or strong in each area, and think about how other people would describe you.

Would they say that you have these qualities?

If you’re really feeling brave, actually ask your team members.

The first quality of a great leader is that they are kind.

Other people feel safe in your presence. They feel welcomed.

They feel like you’re for them.

They feel like they belong.

There’s no competition.

They know that it’s a safe environment for them to be their whole self.

It means that you take interest in them.

It means that you smile when you see them, that your countenance goes up and

your tone and your expression goes up, that you give them a hug or a high five,

and you make them feel welcomed.

It also means that you care about them as a person, and not just

for what they bring to the team, but actually as an individual.

You ask about what’s going on in their life.

You ask how you can support them.

You ask how you can help.

You ask how you can pray.

If they’re moving houses, you say, Hey, let me get We’ll get a team together

and we’ll help you move. All of those things.

You’re kind, you’re caring, you’re loving as a leader.

The second quality of a great leader is that you are confident.

That means you are decisive.

You’re able to move forward without hesitation or worry

or doubt, at least externally.

You might doubt yourself internally, but externally, you’re saying,

This is where we need to go.

This is what we need to do.

This is how we need to get there.

You’re able to make decisions and own them.

That confidence instils confidence in others.

People borrow their confidence from you.

They’re able to say, Alex knows where he’s going, or so and so

knows what they’re doing. They have a plan.

They have good reasoning.

They have good logic behind their decision making.

People need to see you as a leader who knows where they’re going.

If you lack confidence, I just want to encourage you God chose you

to be the leader of your ministry.

He could have chose the other 8 billion people on the planet

to be in your church, but he chose you to be the leader of your specific ministry.

So at least have confidence in the fact that God didn’t make a mistake because

if he wanted someone else in position, he would have put them there.

So be confident in who God made you to be and go lead with that confidence.

The third quality of a great leader is that you are clear, meaning everybody

understands what you expect from them.

They know what you want from them.

They know what you need from them.

They know what’s important to you.

They know what priority things line up in.

They know everything that’s in your head in order for them to succeed.

They know what they need to know in order to do their role well.

It’s your job to equip people with the knowledge of what they need to succeed.

Being clear also means being honest.

It means that people know where they stand with you.

You speak honestly with them about where they’re doing well

and where you’d like them to grow.

They never have to wonder what you’re thinking because they know

you’ll always tell them the truth.

Now, it’s important to be kind, our first quality, and clear.

Don’t be mean and clear, be kind and clear.

How are you doing at being clear with your team?

When things go poorly, do you share that with them?

Maybe send out a weekly email with some of the things

that are on your mind and heart.

The more clearly you can communicate with your team,

the better they can follow you.

Now, before I tell you about the fourth quality of a great I have

seven qualities of a great team member.

If you want a document that you can give to brand new team members and say,

These are the seven qualities of a great worship team member, you

can grab that below in the description.

It’s a printable document that you can hand out to any new team members when

you’re onboarding them or when you’re training them, and you can talk through

the seven points of a great team member so that they have clear expectations

of what you want from them.

And yes, all of the qualities in that document start with the K sound as well.

So grab that below.

It’s in the description, and it’s completely free.

Okay, the fourth quality of a great leader is that you are collaborative, meaning

you don’t have to have all the answers or make all the final decisions yourself.

I personally don’t like the Moses model of leadership where you go up

to God and you get the revelation and you come down, and you whip everybody

into shape and tell them what to do.

I like group consensus because when people feel like they’re part

of the decision, they own it and they live it out more fully.

Consensus is important.

Collaboration is important.

You’re not the one that has to have all the answers.

You’re more interested in the group collaborating and co-creating something

beautiful and wonderful together.

Your job is to facilitate thoughts, discussions, ideas.

Your job is to ask the big questions and let the group

gather around those questions and figure out the best solutions.

You are the primary problem identifier.

Your job is to say, This is the problem I think we need to tackle, and then

bring everybody around that problem and source the best ideas

from their brains to tackle that problem.

You want the group to find the right solutions to the problems

that you’re facing in your ministry.

Those are the four qualities of a great leader: kind,

confident, clear, collaborative.

Now, that’s leadership-specific.
